Arrogance

by stinson on July 8, 2011

I‘m a member of a trade organization that recently made some structural changes which affected their members in a fundamental way.

The other day this organization issued a letter to all the members in response to a large member protest, not only stating their obstinate position that they will not consider reevaluating these changes, but also justifying their reasoning for making this decision, as well as reprimanding the member base for protesting in the first place.

And all this from an organization that is supposed to embody, edify, and serve the people they claim to represent. [continue reading…]

Melting Chocolate Kettles

by stinson on March 14, 2011

So it’s been more than quite a while since anyone has posted on the Radical Notion blog. And how appropriate that I break the silence with a post on this topic (keep reading).

When I was a sophomore in high school I started a band called Borrowed Talent. Ninety-nine percent of the time we were a Smashing Pumpkins cover band. But one time we covered a song by K’s Choice. We played four times total.

Then, when I was a senior in high school, I started a band called Seventeen Seconds-a reference to The Cure and The Smashing Pumpkins. We played original songs, but we never finished writing any of the songs we started. We never played any shows, and we never even rehearsed. In fact, there was no “we” at all because I never even asked anyone to join the band. It was just me!

Introducing Austin
One of my dearest friends has just self published his first book titled Melting Chocolate Kettles. For literally my entire life, I’ve watched Austin develop as a writer and person of extremely excellent intellect and integrity. Austin has an extremely unique and inspiring view of the world. It’s beautiful. You need to pay attention to him. [continue reading…]

Remember the prom? Some people had it better than others. I had fun…. but I noticed that some people had a hard time finding that special someone, for a lot of different reasons.

Let’s cut to the chase: in American culture, girls typically have to wait for guys to ask them to the prom. But they can’t just do NOTHING, they have to make themselves attractive. It’s a huge game, and everyone has a slightly different way of playing it. [continue reading…]

Topspin: Marketing With Data

by stinson on May 17, 2010

This one is from a just a little while back – about three months ago. Shamal Ranasinghe, co-founder of Topspin Media, did a presentation on Managing, Measuring, and Marketing With Data at the MidemNet Academy. He then published the presentation as a blog post on the Topspin blog.

The post highlights some of the features of the Topspin platform, and gives examples of methods to best collect and use data to make extremely targeted marketing decisions.

It blew my mind.

If you are involved in the marketing aspect of the music industry in any way, you need to study this blog post. Make sure you download the slideshow too.

Inspiration from Skybox

April 21, 2010

I‘m a fairly regular reader of Hypebot, and today I came across post there, Skybox Offers Their Fans An Alternative to Filesharing, which covers a dialogue Skybox opened with their fans offering a win/win proposal to those who download their record from filesharing sites. They suggest that anyone who likes the album pick a favorite [...]

What is Conversion?

April 12, 2010

In the most brutal sense of the word, a “conversion rate” is the simple measure of success or failure arrived at when you compare 2 things: how many people came to your website, versus how many of them actually bought something. It’s kind of like the prom- if you ask 10 girls to go to [...]

Chatroulette: They figured it out

March 24, 2010

A few months ago I was poking around on Twitter. As I was checking out who the people I follow were otherwise connected to, I came across someone who had shared a link to Chatroulette (I’m not going to link there, due to all the naked weirdos). The next couple days was a weird experience [...]

How to put the Horse before the Cart

February 26, 2010

Ever heard the expression “Don’t put the cart before the horse!”? Well, it’s time to bring it back out. Right now, there are a lot of bands and musicians who are whipping horses that won’t move. Why can’t they figure it out? No one told them the secret.

The Privilege

February 17, 2010

This one was originally posted on Producer Notes, the blog I author about my experiences in record making. I figured since I control all the content on that blog, that I would steal from myself a little bit, and re-publish some of those posts which fit the topic of this blog. I’ve got a few [...]
