Marketing

Remember the prom? Some people had it better than others. I had fun…. but I noticed that some people had a hard time finding that special someone, for a lot of different reasons.

Let’s cut to the chase: in American culture, girls typically have to wait for guys to ask them to the prom. But they can’t just do NOTHING, they have to make themselves attractive. It’s a huge game, and everyone has a slightly different way of playing it. [continue reading…]

Topspin: Marketing With Data

by stinson on May 17, 2010

This one is from a just a little while back – about three months ago. Shamal Ranasinghe, co-founder of Topspin Media, did a presentation on Managing, Measuring, and Marketing With Data at the MidemNet Academy. He then published the presentation as a blog post on the Topspin blog.

The post highlights some of the features of the Topspin platform, and gives examples of methods to best collect and use data to make extremely targeted marketing decisions.

It blew my mind.

If you are involved in the marketing aspect of the music industry in any way, you need to study this blog post. Make sure you download the slideshow too.

Inspiration from Skybox

by stinson on April 21, 2010

I‘m a fairly regular reader of Hypebot, and today I came across post there, Skybox Offers Their Fans An Alternative to Filesharing, which covers a dialogue Skybox opened with their fans offering a win/win proposal to those who download their record from filesharing sites.

They suggest that anyone who likes the album pick a favorite song, and email it to 10 friends. On their website Skybox supports this request by including share buttons on all the music players on the site. Here’s the original post on the Skybox website: http://skyboxmusic.com/2010/04/filesharing-ok-cool-but-do-us-a-favor-too/

I had never heard of Skybox, but any band who understands fan engagement and puts their fans first (which Skybox is clearly doing), always gets me intrigued. So I popped over to their site to listen to some music. The first track I came across was In a Dream, which they were offering as a download in exchange for an email address. I did, in fact, like the song, so right then-as I was completely inspired by what the band is doing on a fan engagement level, as well as backing that up with good music-I decided that I needed to take them up on their offer and help them share their music. At the bottom of this post you will find the music player embedded. [continue reading…]

What is Conversion?

by Ernest on April 12, 2010

In the most brutal sense of the word, a “conversion rate” is the simple measure of success or failure arrived at when you compare 2 things: how many people came to your website, versus how many of them actually bought something. It’s kind of like the prom- if you ask 10 girls to go to the prom, and they all turn you down, you’re probably doing something wrong.

The numbers, even for a moderately successful site, are pretty low- about 3 to 5 percent is good. So what does this mean? Are we all failures?

Does this mean that if you aren’t some greasy used car salesman, you can’t have an online business? Does this mean that artists who just want people to see their stuff can’t survive in a sharky world? Those are the first 2 images I saw in my head when I first learned about this from Harald Anderson, an internet marketing guru, as he was sitting across the table from me at the Sunset Grill in Nashville, TN, at 1 am a few years back. Chatroulette: They figured it out

March 24, 2010

A few months ago I was poking around on Twitter. As I was checking out who the people I follow were otherwise connected to, I came across someone who had shared a link to Chatroulette (I’m not going to link there, due to all the naked weirdos). The next couple days was a weird experience [...]

How to put the Horse before the Cart

February 26, 2010

Ever heard the expression “Don’t put the cart before the horse!”? Well, it’s time to bring it back out. Right now, there are a lot of bands and musicians who are whipping horses that won’t move. Why can’t they figure it out? No one told them the secret.

The Privilege

February 17, 2010

This one was originally posted on Producer Notes, the blog I author about my experiences in record making. I figured since I control all the content on that blog, that I would steal from myself a little bit, and re-publish some of those posts which fit the topic of this blog. I’ve got a few [...]
