To Teach Is To Learn

by stinson on April 28, 2010

Here’s a third post I lifted from Producer Notes, my personal blog on record making. As mentioned, I’ll continue to make a note of when I re-publish content from that blog which fits the context of the Radical Notion blog. You can find the previous two posts here: The Privilege and Give Away The Secret

I‘ve got some friends who are a little bit older than me, and have been making records longer than me. It’s great to have these friends, as they are my mentors. They teach me things on a near daily basis. They challenge me to keep my production skills sharp.

I also have a group of friends who are a little bit younger than me for whom I act as the mentor. The (maybe not so) ironic thing is that they teach me just as much-and sometimes more-than I teach them. [continue reading…]

Inspiration from Skybox

by stinson on April 21, 2010

I‘m a fairly regular reader of Hypebot, and today I came across post there, Skybox Offers Their Fans An Alternative to Filesharing, which covers a dialogue Skybox opened with their fans offering a win/win proposal to those who download their record from filesharing sites.

They suggest that anyone who likes the album pick a favorite song, and email it to 10 friends. On their website Skybox supports this request by including share buttons on all the music players on the site. Here’s the original post on the Skybox website: http://skyboxmusic.com/2010/04/filesharing-ok-cool-but-do-us-a-favor-too/

I had never heard of Skybox, but any band who understands fan engagement and puts their fans first (which Skybox is clearly doing), always gets me intrigued. So I popped over to their site to listen to some music. The first track I came across was In a Dream, which they were offering as a download in exchange for an email address. I did, in fact, like the song, so right then-as I was completely inspired by what the band is doing on a fan engagement level, as well as backing that up with good music-I decided that I needed to take them up on their offer and help them share their music. At the bottom of this post you will find the music player embedded. [continue reading…]

We’re excited to welcome another contributor to be a part of this blog. My friend, Skip Franklin, started a video series called Indie Nashville, about a year ago with Sharon Koltick of the Nashville-based indie rock band, Kink Ador [KinkAdor.com]. Videos are hosted by Sharon, Damien Horne, and Ernest Chapman (another contributor to this blog), and showcase what is happening in and around the Nashville indie rock community-bands, events, clubs, people, places, etc.

So far this video series has lived primarily on Facebook, where Skip posts videos periodically via his personality there. [continue reading…]

Radical Notion Digital: New and Improved

by stinson on April 16, 2010

<a href="http://store.radicalnotion.net/album/mother-father-physical-heaven-pre-order">The Hours Witch by Radical Notion (independent media)</a>

We spent a good portion of last week getting our store, Radical Notion Digital, switched over to the Bandcamp platform, re-launching exactly a week ago.

I’m personally excited about now being set up on Bandcamp, as I feel our online store is more stable and easier to use. The people at Bandcamp created their service with music fans and music makers specifically in mind. Our previous store was much harder to maintain, and because of that I always felt like I was not able to take care of our fans the way you needed to be taken care of. [continue reading…]

What is Conversion?

April 12, 2010

In the most brutal sense of the word, a “conversion rate” is the simple measure of success or failure arrived at when you compare 2 things: how many people came to your website, versus how many of them actually bought something. It’s kind of like the prom- if you ask 10 girls to go to [...]
